Maryland Unemployment Numbers Getting Worse- O’Malley Administration Says Things Are Getting Better

Subject: Maryland Unemployment Numbers Getting Worse- O’Malley Administration Says Things Are Getting Better

The monthly jobs report was released yesterday – and the news for Maryland is not good. The unemployment percentage fell to 7.1% due to Marylanders dropping out of the workforce, not because more workers were hired. Economic expert Anirban Basu stated “what has taken place since late April has been a reversal of the optimism that had been emerging…” In response, the O’Malley administration said that we are seeing “consistent improvement” even though this will be the worst month for job growth in the second quarter (Maryland employers added a measly 1,600 to the rolls).

I am not sure what state the Secretary Alexander Sanchez of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation was in when he said we were improving, but it certainly wasn’t our Maryland. With a terrible business environment and budget deficits as far as the eye can see, we can expect more unfavorable job reports.

Gov. O’Malley still doesn’t get it. At the National Governors Association convention in Boston, O’Malley falsely claimed he did NOT perform any accounting gimmickry to balance this year’s budget. Of course we know that not to be true, as O’Malley counted on $389 million from a federal bailout to balance the budget. He is also leaving an $8.3 billion structural deficit for Marylanders to tackle over the next 5 years.

The answer is simple: STOP THE WASTEFUL SPENDING and CUT TAXES. Businesses will start hiring again when the government gets out of the way and puts their fiscal house in order.
