Rutledge Attends Holocaust Remembrance Day in Pikesville and promises to Never Forget the culture of death that became the Holocaust.

On April 11, 2010, I attended "Promises Made, Promises Broken, Promises Kept", Yom Ha’Shoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, at the Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Pikesville, MD. I was a guest of Dr. Joshua Tsitlik, a Russian survivor of the Holocaust. The audience and participants were encouraged to vow to Never Forget the culture of death propagated by the Nazis that resulted in the murder of over 6,000,000 Jews. Speakers included Governor O’Malley and Baltimore Mayor Rawlings-Blake. Governor O’Malley told us that he had traveled to Israel and saw a heap of shoes of children who were murdered in the holocaust. The Governor related how that sad image was seared into his memory. Mayor Rawlings-Blake expressed her horror at the events of the holocaust and shared that the evil perpetrated on the Jews defied explanation. The memorial service reminded us how each human being has inherent value and that human life must be protected.

As I pondered what it meant to vow to Never Forget, it struck me that merely to remember the atrocity lacks meaning unless we remain vigilant and willing to identify ideas and policies that devalue human life. While their expressions of horror and sympathy were sincere, neither the Governor nor the Mayor expressed any concern about whether we here in America have already begun to embrace a culture of death. Ironically, both Governor O’Malley and Mayor Rawlings-Blake promote abortion rights. Both are comfortable with the notion that some lives are best not lived. Both are comfortable funding the early termination of innocent life with taxpayer money. Both enjoy the support of Planned Parenthood, the leading proponent of unrestricted abortion.

If we answer the call of the Shoah to Never Forget, we should be reminded that the now discredited eugenics movement influenced the creation of Planned Parenthood’s vision for population control. The same eugenics movement also gave life to the Nazi’s diabolical application of genetic hygiene that drove them to purge the Aryan race of all Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, and mentally handicapped "useless eaters."

If we are to Never Forget, we should favor public policies that promote and protect innocent life, and we should be willing to criticize and reject those that promote a disregard for the value of human life.

My opponent in this year’s US Senate race will be Senator Barbara Mikulski. For over 33 years in Washington, Barbara Mikulski has labored to build federal policies that promote and fund abortion on demand world-wide. She is praised by such pro-abortion groups as Planned Parenthood and Emily’s List. She helped craft that portion of the Health Care Bill that will increase the availability of funding for abortions. Mikulski’s allies at Planned Parenthood have declared victory, rejoicing that the Stupak restriction on federal funding of abortions was excluded from the final bill and was not included in the President’s executive order. They realize that the President’s order provides no protection for the unborn child. Likewise, Senator Mikulski is pleased with her victory over the Stupak amendment, and she is proud to sponsor abortion at home and abroad with our tax dollars.

In contrast to Barbara Mikulski, I believe that Roe v Wade was wrongly decided and will one day be viewed as a barbaric and unenlightened ruling. That decision, like the Dred Scott decision, has unleashed a great deal of death and suffering. The Supreme Court decided in the Dred Scott case that blacks were considered an inferior class of beings that could not be citizens worthy of Constitutional protection. Today, based on Roe v Wade, our federal courts treat a human in the womb as an inferior class of being, unworthy of Constitutional protection. Both the Dred Scott and Roe decisions enshrine the idea that some classes of human life are inferior and unworthy of equal protection under the law. Both decisions have engraved on our Nation a culture of death and inhumanity. Both are wrong and have resulted in the violation of basic human rights.

This year the voters of Maryland will have a decision to make. Will the people of Maryland continue on the road to a culture of death? Or will Maryland embrace life and liberty? As your United States Senator, I will place a high value on human life and human dignity. I will vote to ban partial birth abortion. I will vote to ban federal funding of abortion at home and abroad. I will support legislation to protect the unborn as a person under the Constitution. If you share my rejection of a culture of death, please vote your conscience and your convictions this year. Please vote for me, Jim Rutledge, to be your United States Senator, and help me defeat Barbara Mikulski and her culture of death.
