ANNAPOLIS — If a bill supporters are calling the Health Care Freedom Act of 2010 passes the Maryland General Assembly this year, Maryland residents would not have to pay fines if they do not purchase health care coverage.

Washington County Republican Dels. Christopher B. Shank and Andrew A. Serafini, and Del. Charles A. Jenkins, R-Frederick/Washington, are sponsors of the bill, House Bill 603. State Sen. Alex X. Mooney, R-Frederick/Washington, is a sponsor of corresponding Senate Bill 397.

Shank testified in favor of the bill Thursday before the House Health and Government Operations Committee.

There is considerable attention paid to health care reform, and most people would agree the system needs massive changes, Shank told the committee.

“But many fear being forced into another plan,” he said.
