For the record, I was at the meeting last night. Commissioner Wargotz made very clear he is opposed to the recommendations of the Citizens’ Budget Committee and said he will vote against any tax increases.
I live in Queen Anne’s County, which is facing a $17 million budget deficit. The proposed solution by the the county’s Citizens Budget Committee is to reduce spending by $5.8 million and RAISE taxes. The committees is recommending a increase in the real property tax rate t0 $0.87 per $100 of assessment from $0.77, and an increase in the county’s piggy back tax from 2.8% to 3.2%. This would put QAC’s income tax rate on par with PG, Montgomery, and Howard–the most expensive counties in the state in which to live.
Forget for a moment that the committee did not provide the public with an itemized budget to review only an opaque summary, there are more cuts that can be made especially in the education budget, and that there are non-tax revenue options the county is not pursuing–the committee authors published a condescending executive summary, in which they saw fit to preemptively insult opponents of their proposed tax increases. More on the alternatives to the recommendations later, but the committee authors did themselves no favors by insulting tax increase opponents, who possess ideas to solve the budget problem without doing on the backs of county taxpayers.

Letter to Senator Munson and the Press in regards to his vote for 1 million dollars to Casa De Maryland’s Multi Cultural Center that will be assisting Illegal Aliens on our Tax Dollars.
Hi Senator Munson (R) District 2,
I was wondering, since you voted to give 1 million dollars to Casa De Maryland for this building, were you planning on attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony? I feel it is very important for all those who voted to give this organization who was just caught with an Illegal Alien residing at Silver Spring Location that they all show up for this, since it was being restored with Tax Payer Dollars. Help Save Maryland, the group labeled in your previous statement regarding them, likened to the KKK and Nativist/Extremist and labeled as a Hate Group by SPLC is going to be there. We wanted to be sure those who voted to assist them would be there for this Historic Moment of Display with our Tax Dollars.
I can send you all the details if you would like, allot of us will be in attendance, including, most likely, the Governor, County Exec, Babs Mikulski and many many other dignitary’s. I understand this is one of those Heavy Lifting Bills that Tim Rowland is so proud of yourself and John Donoghue as you two are always working so hard for us with our Tax Dollars. You do remember that this was a totally separate vote from the budget and was voted on, on it’s own merits. Now that there is proof of this organization assisting and abetting and harboring Illegal Aliens and that they promote on their website, regardless of Immigration Status, they will find you work, that I would pass this information along to you.

This was the protest by Help Save Maryland, and I was there. We were peaceful, law abiding, and well behaved. Yet the news release describes us as anti-immigrant militants who blocked sidewalks on busy streets, shouted through megaphones, and hurled racist epitaphs [sic] and yelled and cursed at small children.
I’ve never read such lying trash in my life. First off, the hispanics across the street were the ones yelling, and the hispanics driving up and down the street were giving us the finger salute. And it was the Casa people blocking the driveway, not us, as several police officers were there and let us know the rules as soon as we arrived. No blocking the drive was one of them. Move out of the way of anyone that was walking down the sidewalk. I’d say the protesters bent over backwards to abide by the law/rule, whatever you want to call it. It was the hispanics that tried to instigate trouble.
If we did what the Casa website claims, don’t you think the cops would have intervened? Oh yeah, this one really got me. Supposedly families walking to shopes were starteled by the anti-immigrant militants. What crap! Frankly, some of us were very uncomfortable and did not feel safe because although the Casa website said the area is 50% latino, it’s more like 99%. Gee, did I even see a handful of whites or blacks driving by?
This blatantly false reporting really burns me up. Typical left-wing propaganda. This jsut makes me more determined to stand up as an American citizen and say enough!

-CASA Combats Hate with Love
An Outpouring of Community Support Greets Anti-Immigrant Militants Protesting in Multicultural Neighborhood -
(Silver Spring, MD) Several dozen anti-immigrant and pro-Arizona militants who blocked sidewalks on busy University Boulevard in East Silver Spring today were greeted by more than 70 volunteers who came to the site to plant flowers.
The protest was organized by Help Save Maryland, a group that has been declared a nativist/extremist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization whose history has been spent combating the Klu Klux Klan and other hate groups. The several dozen immigration opponents levied signs, shouted through megaphones, and on several occasions hurtled racist epitaphs and yelled and cursed at small children.
Rather than organize a counter-protest, CASA invited community members, civic association and church activists, and others to spend several hours at the same site planting flowers and sharing stories. The seventy-four volunteers included a Methodist reverend, local residents, and political leaders. Describing why they wanted to participate, many described their frustration with the unfolding human rights drama in the State of Arizona and make a statement that Maryland will not follow suit.
Help Save Maryland chose to target a location in the Long Branch neighborhood of Eastern Montgomery County – the most diverse part of the region, with more than 130 languages spoken at local elementary schools. Almost 50% of the neighborhood is Latino and the foreign-born population of Long Branch is almost 60%. Of the several anti-immigrant activists that were interviewed, none lived in the neighborhood and few in the county. Families walking to shops in the busy neighborhood were startled by the anti-immigrant militants and several chose to enter the CASA center to volunteer and show support.

The Town Council of Herndon, Virginia voted 6-1 last night to seek federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency training for certain town police officers to enable them to perform “certain functions of an immigration officer.” Herndon is the first town in the U.S. to officially approve a request for the ICE training, and it is also the smallest of the 6-8 jurisdictions in the nation that have sought such capabilities for local law enforcement personnel.
The 287(g) program is extremely significant because it allows the local police to help enforce U.S. immigration laws. Dozens of jurisdictions throughout the U.S. are considering or hacve already implemented this program or others related to immigration enforcement at the local level. Currently, many U.S. jurisdictions do not check the legal residency status of persons detained for criminal violations. This has resulted in situations where illegal aliens detained for crimes have been freed or released on bail even though they were in in this country illegally at the time.
This action by the Herndon Town Council amounts to another huge victory for the local citizens’ group Help Save Herndon, which provided a detailed report on the 287(g) program to the Council and Herndon Town staff. Help Save Herndon gainedinternational recognition in May, 2006, when its grassroots political efforts succeeded in turning out almost the entire town government over a day labor center which had been created against the wishes of a majority of the town’s legal residents. Help Save Herndon’s successes can be viewed as the first shots of the current political revolution in America.
Aubrey Stokes of Help Save Herndon speaks to the Herndon Town Council in support of ICE training for Herndon policeThe entire slate of candidates endorsed by Help Save Herndon in May – Dave Kirby, Connie Hutchinson, Dennis Husch, Bill Tirrell, Jr, Charles Waddell, and Mayor Steve DeBenedittis – voted for the resolution to participate in the 287(g) program. Harlan Reece, the only re-elected member of the former council who had voted to approve the Herndon day labor site, was the sole vote against immigration enforcement training for local police.
Thirty-one audience members spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, and two-thirds spoke in favor of the 287(g) program.
One of the dissenters was Ana Rochac, wife of Herndon defeated Town Council candidate Jorge Rochac.
Mrs. Rochac provided one of the more revealing moments during the public testimony.
A previous speaker had referred to his perception that illegal aliens were not becoming “acculturated” in Herndon. He indicated there were cases where Hispanics who he assumed were illegal had a proclivity for loitering and littering, and he noted that from his experiences visiting Central America these seemed to be characteristic of the local culture there. He told the Council that Herndon residents need to do a better job explaining to immigrants that American culture is different.
Mrs. Rochac argued that U.S. foreign policy had contributed to the motivation for Latin Americans to migrate to the U.S. “None of your ancestors, or my ancestors, were in the United States 400 years ago…When the war was fought in my country – in my other country – of El Salvador, the United States helped alot to our army.”
Whether intended or not, Mrs. Rochac certainly confirmed the notion that prominent Hispanic advocates do not believe legal citizens of America have any greater claim to legitimate residency here than those who have come here illegally, and she also let slip that she has (at best) a dual allegiance.
Her husband is just a fun guy. No complaints on that front.
Although he’s somwhat wedded to the notion that anyone who has a problem with illegal immigration is a bigot. Apart from that, he and I are on the same page.

“The Robert and Kendel Ehrlich Show,” which airs for two hours each Saturday morning on WBAL-AM, should not be considered a campaign contribution, the Maryland attorney general’s office said in a letter released Monday.
The letter came as advice to the State Board of Elections after the Maryland Democratic Party complained to the board that the show is essentially an unreported in-kind campaign contribution from the station to former Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., who is trying to reclaim the state’s top job from Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley.
In an 11-page letter to Elections Administrator Linda H. Lamone, Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey L. Darsie advised the elections board that a court likely would not find the show in violation of any state election laws and that attempts to “regulate media appearances by a candidate, potential candidate or others through a state’s campaign finance laws” could run afoul of the First Amendment.
