Re-Election Mail at Taxpayers Expense?

Subject: Re-Election Mail at Taxpayers Expense?

Header
jeff ,

This weekend the SalisburyDaily Times reported that Rep. Frank Kratovil (MD-1) spent over $320,000 of our money to communicate with district residents via mail. This practice is called “Franked” mail (no pun intended), and has been done by every Congressional representative for several decades. Many of these communications come in the form of large, full color glossy brochures and you may receive them from your representative on a regular basis.

The problem is that they have the look, feel and message of a campaign-style mailer, and we the taxpayers are picking up the tab. The article sites a line in a Kratovil communication where he is fighting “out-of-control spending” – which is a nice campaign slogan, but certainly not an explanation for a vote on an important bill.

The Congressman from the 1 st district is also one of the biggest spenders in Washington. Kratovil ranked 15 th out of 435 members when it came to franked mail. How can you claim to fight out-of-control spending when you are using taxpayer dollars to send campaign-style messages?

If Frank Kratovil is spending $320k, imagine how much the entire is spending! We are in the worst recession since the Great Depression, and unemployment is at 10%. There is no reason we should be paying millions of dollars so that the politicians in Congress can send gear up for their re-election campaigns. With the advent of email and the internet, there is little reason for franked mail. It costs too much and does not deliver enough bang for the buck.

AFP-Maryland encourages you to contact your representatives and tell them to stop wasting our money on franked mail.

Several national and local groups are dropping plans for a June 5 rally in Phoenix Arizona to unite with more groups on June 12 to form a larger rally in support of the state of Arizona, SB 1070, and the enforcement of our existing border and immigration laws.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) and Tea Party Patriots Live decided to combine strength on June 12 to lower confusion about multiple events and to increase turnout and political impact.

This historic combined event will be on Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 4-7pm in Bolin Memorial Park, which is located at 1649 W. Adams St. in Phoenix, AZ across from the Arizona legislature.

"We want Americans from all states to converge on Arizona with us on the weekend of June 12 to shop in the state and show our support for local police enforcing our immigration laws, SB 1070, and the brave people in Arizona that have spoken out for the American public on immigration," said William Gheen President of ALIPAC. "We are happy to see so many different groups working together and combining strength to support Arizona."

Organizations that are sponsoring the combined event on June 12 now include Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, Tea Party Patriots Live, NumbersUSA, Resistnet.com, America’s Black Shield, 9-11 Families for a Secure America, NC Listen, Scottsdale Tea Party, Houston Tea Party Society, and Citizens in Action.

More national and local groups are joining the June 12 effort and an updated list will be released next Monday.

Congressman Steve King is one of the many guest speakers and other members of Congress are being invited to speak along with Governor Jan Brewer, Arizona Representative Russell Pearce, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Another Outstanding Article from Ron Miller, Executive Director, Regular Folks United

During my son’s high school band recital on Monday, something rare and special happened. The band director spoke of a tradition that had been lost in our country, that of honoring our nation’s flag and the men and women who defend it. He asked us to stand while the Navy Junior ROTC color guard brought forth the colors. The band struck up “The Star-Spangled Banner” while we stood, and I noticed the band director was standing ramrod straight, like a soldier at attention.

At the end of the concert, the band played “America the Beautiful” and he once again asked us to stand while the colors were brought forward. Again, he stood tall and erect in perfect military fashion until the colors had left the auditorium. His reverence for our flag moved me, and I commended him afterward for what he had done.

I told him how his actions as a school official stood in stark contrast to those of the vice-principal at a California high school, who last week forced several teens wearing t-shirts with the American flag on them to turn the shirts inside out, remove them or go to the principal’s office to be sent home.  The vice-principal took these actions to avoid offending the majority Hispanic student body on Cinco de Mayo.

In fact, I thought the news story might have been the motivation for the band director’s gesture of support for the flag, but he wasn’t aware of it. I appreciated his actions even more as a result.

The travesty in California continued with hundreds of Hispanic students marching in protest, not because of the violation of their classmates’ First Amendment rights, but because they had the temerity to wear American flag t-shirts in an American high school. Oh, the horror!

Here in Maryland, illegal immigrants  protest openly and demand rights and privileges to which they are not entitled, and our governor and General Assembly give taxpayer dollars to an organization, Casa de Maryland, whose mission statement openly flaunts its intent to disobey the law by providing assistance “regardless of immigration status” – their words, not mine. The fact our state officials in Annapolis, and local governments in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, as well as the city of Baltimore, have given this organization millions of our hard-earned family funds over the years, even in the midst of a recession, ought to have every single Marylander in a rage against their public “servants.”

More frustrating still is the support illegal aliens receive from the Catholic Church and other mainline denominations, which has the effect of providing these lawbreakers with moral sanction.  People of faith are made to feel guilty about not providing sanctuary to these illegal aliens, and this manipulation is a cynical distortion of the Biblical direction to treat aliens with compassion.

The “alien” in the Bible to whom we are commanded to show compassion, and for whom the Hebrew word ger is used, is a stranger that has taken up residence in the land with the permission of the local authorities – a legal immigrant. Moreover, the principle of sanctuary as described in the Bible applies only to one accused of involuntary manslaughter, and is not intended to support evasion of the law, but to ensure an accused person the opportunity for a fair trial.

There is no Biblical sanction to essentially excuse the harsh conditions in other countries by encouraging their citizens to flee and take up residence in our nation without our permission.

There is no ethical reason to render illegal aliens vulnerable to extortion, injury or death at the hands of human smugglers, or humiliation due to capture and deportation by law enforcement authorities, or subject them to exploitation by unscrupulous employers.

There is no morality in denying the poor of our nation the opportunity to work for a living by importing the cheap labor offered by illegal aliens.

There is no blessing in putting our people’s lives at risk due to violent crime or terrorism allowed to cross our insecure borders.

There is no divine justification for breaking the legitimate laws of a sovereign nation.

All of this behavior that seeks to wrap illegal aliens in the mantle of morality and civil rights begs the question: What is American citizenship worth?

At the heart of this heated debate is the question of value. Those of us who are citizens or who have legal status in the United States consider our status to have value in the eyes of the law and society as a whole. That is why certain privileges are accorded to citizens that are not available to legal immigrants, and legal immigrants are accorded privileges not available to non-resident aliens.

Because our citizenship or legal immigrant status have value, we expect those who aspire to a higher status to earn them. They are not universal birthrights, nor are they for the taking. I have yet to encounter an advocate for illegal aliens who could justify to me why they should be given, or be permitted to take, the privileges of citizenship or legal immigrant status.

If residence in the United States is secured through theft, intimidation, or fear rather than legal means, and if citizenship or legal immigrant status are granted in spite of how residence was obtained, our government is saying to us, “Your citizenship or legal immigrant status has no special value. It can be given to anyone, anytime, anywhere.”

That is why illegal aliens and their supporters fly the flags of their homelands with pride, while showing disrespect to the flag of the nation that is harboring them. That is why they feel justified in committing acts of vandalism and assault in protest of our laws. They are being told by their allies, too many of who hold positions of authority in government at all levels, that there is nothing unique about American citizenship or legal residency that requires their adherence to the law or respect for our people or our customs.

The first great influx of immigrants to the United States made us a better nation because they left behind the allegiances of their homelands and adopted America as their new home. President Theodore Roosevelt described the process which has governed immigration to America for generations – until today:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
“But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all.
“We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

While our federal government fails in its fundamental constitutional duties, states and localities have had to step up. While much is being made of the Arizona immigration law, it is simply a restatement of existing federal law, not dissimilar to a law enacted in Prince William County in Virginia. The results of the law’s enforcement in that county have been dramatic; in the first year, crime dropped by 18% and the next year, by 20%. Uninsured births dropped by 500, thereby lowering hospital costs. Smaller classes at school mean less stress on the infrastructure, teachers and administrators. These improving indicators have led to an active and positive business development climate which holds the promise of future job creation.

Living in America is a privilege; over 1 million people immigrate to America legally every year. Our government wants to cheapen that privilege and devalue the special blessing we have of being Americans. Don’t let them do it.

Fly the Stars and Stripes with pride. Exercise your right to vote. Oust every elected official who seeks to give away American citizenship or legal residence, telling them as the door hits them on the way out, “It’s not yours to give away – now go away!”

Jim Rutledge Denounces Withdrawal Rumor in Maryland Senate Race
Rutledge Proud To Be Leading Conservative Movement to Retire Barbara Mikulski

FOREST HILL, Maryland U.S. Senate Candidate Jim Rutledge denounced the rumor that he might withdraw from the U.S. Senate race and instead seek to become Maryland’s Attorney General. The Rutledge for Senate Campaign believes this is probably the first of many desperate acts that voters will see from liberal opponents. Jim Rutledge said, "You know you’re winning when your opponents start spreading rumors about you."

Taxpayers are standing firm across the nation in the effort to reform Washington and bring career politicians like Barbara Mikulski home. Election results continue to show proof that Americans are sick and tired of corporate bailouts and deficit spending. Uncontrolled spending supported by Barbara Mikulski is leading our nation down the path of financial ruin. The Congressional Budge Office projects that the federal budget will show a deficit of 1.3 trillion dollars for 2010. Barbara Mikulski remains unapologetic for the financial disaster she has helped create. Mikulski and her Washington friends are driving America further into debt by borrowing and spending an estimated 600 billion dollars a year above revenue.

The Rutledge Campaign continues to gain momentum as Jim Rutledge’s conservative message of fiscal responsibility spreads throughout Maryland. Unlike Eric Wargotz, Jim Rutledge does not have a liberal track record to defend. Jim Rutledge has accepted the responsibility to lead Marylanders in this fight to end Barbara Mikulski’s spending spree. The constitutional principles set forth by our Founding Fathers will continue to guide Jim Rutledge in his campaign to help restore Washington and lead our nation out of debt.

Jim Rutledge said, "I’m humbled by the support I’m receiving from conservatives, from Tea Party activists, and from working men and women who are tired of a Senator that does not listen to them." In the coming months the Rutledge for Senate Campaign will persist in its efforts to provide a clear alternative to the liberal practices of Eric Wargotz and Barbara Mikulski.

Other than a good excuse for a few drinks, who cares about this lowly Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo?
- Its San Jacinto Day we should be celebrating!

Originally published 04:00 a.m., May 7, 2010, updated 06:20 p.m., May 8, 2010

WASHINGTON TIMES EDITORIAL: Stinko de Mayo

On May 5, five students at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif., were sent home for wearing clothing featuring the American flag. Their offense: trespassing on Mexican heritage during Cinco de Mayo. Administrators called the flag-wearing "incendiary" and likely to cause violence.

The school district overrode the decision, and the boys were allowed to return to school. In response yesterday, about 200 students staged a walkout carrying Mexican flags. The question is: Who taught these kids to hate America so much?
There should be nothing disrespectful about the U.S. flag to Americans of Mexican descent or to any other immigrant group. Teaching children that their heritage is at odds with their citizenship promotes disunity and divisiveness. While the high school’s administrators may have been responding to a real public-safety threat, that threat was the product of their failure to instill a sense of national pride in their students.

Identity politics has become such a staple of public life and education in recent decades that incidents like this illustrate the poisonous effects it has on the nation. In the past, immigrant groups would attempt to outdo each other in demonstrating their patriotic attachment to the country that gave them safety, opportunity and freedom. Today, immigrant activist groups think patriotism is at best an inconvenience, at worst a sellout. They have replaced the melting pot with hardening battle lines in a struggle for power.

It is odd that Cinco de Mayo has become a focus of conflict. In Mexico, it is a relatively unimportant, mainly local holiday. But in the United States, it has become the de facto Mexican nationalist day, a far cry from its origins in the 1980s as a marketing gimmick by beer importers to sell brews that taste best with lime wedges.

This is only the latest instance of Old Glory being forced into the closet. In 2006, a Colorado school seeking to placate Mexican nationalists banned the American flag. After a mass student protest, Mexican flags were banned as well. In 2008, Dos Palos, Calif., high school student Jake Shelly was forced to remove a red, white and blue tie-dyed American-flag T-shirt he had worn to school because he was in violation of a dress code banning "shirts/blouses that promote specific races, cultures, or ethnicities."

In 2007, students at Hobbton High School in Sampson County, N.C., were not allowed to wear American-flag-themed clothes on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks because of a general school prohibition on garments featuring flags. The superintendent of schools said that "educators didn’t want to be forced to pick and choose which flags should be permissible."

Not all flags are created equal. Some flags may be fashion statements, but the American flag is the patriotic symbol of the nation in which we live. This is why the American flag flies outside schools as opposed to, say, Zimbabwe’s.

Schools should spend less time telling patriotic students not to cause a ruckus simply by wearing the national colors and more time teaching the kids who are offended by the American flag how wrongheaded their views are. This might require teachers and administrators to begin making value judgments and moral choices for the benefit of the children they are charged with educating. The Stars and Stripes should be a proud statement of unity for all.

Time to Pull the Plug on this Bozo

Delegate Saqib Ali is a light-weight, illegal alien supporting, CASA de Maryland loving delegate from Gaithersburg (DEMOCRAT- Dist-39). His latest fantasy is to run for state senator against Senator Nancy King (D-Dist-39).

Ali sponsored some really important bills in Annapolis this past session, No Joke:

Punjabi Cultural Awareness Day Act
Malfunctioning Traffic Light Act
Moving Violation Points Accountability Act Rental Car Parking Ticket Fairness Act
No So-Called Sexual Stimulant Pills for Kids Act

OK, Thomas Jefferson he is not. But just when you think Saqibbi is actually maturing the following hits the press. Hopefully Ali will spend the 2011-12 session in Annapolis in his Gaithersburg home.

Legislators exchange harsh talk over phone call
Rhetoric between Forehand, Ali boils over in District 39 race

by Alan Brody | Staff Writer

ANNAPOLIS – Tensions flared this week between two Montgomery County lawmakers engaged in separate Democratic primaries that could portend a summer of bitter campaign rhetoric in the state’s largest jurisdiction. The dispute involving Sen. Jennie M. Forehand and Del. Saqib Ali included allegations of "Chicago-style intimidation tactics" and a series of "dirty tricks," according to characterizations by both legislators.

At issue is a telephone call that Ali (D-Dist. 39) of Gaithersburg made to Forehand on April 24 in which the first-term delegate allegedly asked the longtime senator whether she planned to take sides in the race between him and Sen. Nancy J. King. Ali said he has placed similar calls to numerous elected officials in Montgomery County to gauge their support. But the two politicians recalled radically different versions of their conversation.

Forehand (D-Dist. 17) of Rockville said Ali suggested that she stay out of the District 39 race or else he would contribute a large sum of money to Forehand’s Democratic opponent, former Del. Cheryl Kagan. Ali contended that he never mentioned Kagan or donating money to her campaign if Forehand endorsed King (D-Dist. 39) of Montgomery Village.

"Anyone can fire off an angry letter saying this is what you said in a phone conversation – I could do that, too – but it’s not verifiable," Ali said in an interview Thursday. The sharply worded letter – sent on Forehand’s campaign letterhead and dated April 28 – which was obtained by The Gazette makes several charges. "For someone who spends so much time talking about transparency in politics, your brazen and fumbling attempt at political coercion would make Richard Daley’s most hardened ward heelers blush," the letter reads.

"In my years of involvement in local and state politics, I have never received a threat, much less one such as you delivered on Saturday. Corrosive tactics such as these are precisely why so many Americans are losing faith in the political process, and are increasingly skeptical of its potential as a vehicle for progressive change." Ali, who denied that he made any threats, suspected King’s allies of being behind Forehand’s response. "There’s a pattern where my opponent and her surrogates go ahead and say things about me that are untrue or are false allegations," he said.

According to Ali, the brief telephone conversation between him and Forehand was amiable and the letter "goes far beyond the pale by making outlandish, completely unverifiable and frankly unbelievable claims." "Never could I have imagined that such a chat would be twisted into the kinds of vague allegations that have resulted," he added in an e-mail statement to The Gazette. King said Forehand notified her of the phone call from Ali, but that she had not received a copy of her letter.

"I just decided that I would stay out of it," King said. "I’m more focused on running my race and not concentrating on what my opponent is doing." Kagan said she found it bizarre that Forehand sent her a copy of the letter. Neither King nor Ali has sought her support in their race. "I’m not any part of this conversation except for my commitment to transparency and campaign finance reform," she said.

In an interview, Ali accused Forehand of killing one of his bills during the recently concluded General Assembly session – a measure requiring motorists to reduce their speed and prepare to yield to other vehicles when they approach a malfunctioning traffic signal. He also alleged that King’s allies made baseless claims in a January story in The Gazette that raised questions about his ethics.

Ali believes it is an orchestrated attempt to undercut his campaign. "As we move forward with this campaign, there may be more smears and personal insults directed at me from other surrogates doing my opponent’s bidding," he said in the written statement. He promised instead to focus on issues such as creating jobs, improving public education, cleaning up the environment and making government more transparent.

But Forehand said she was put off by Ali’s tone, and noted that the decision to write the stern rebuke was hers alone. "It seemed to cross the line of civility among colleagues," she said of the telephone conversation. Regardless of who wins the District 39 race, Forehand said she wants to have a professional relationship if she also receives another four years.

Despite the spat, she said it won’t change her decision to stay out of other races. "I’ve got enough to do with my own," Forehand said.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Tuesday, May 4

Jim Rutledge Pledges Support to Pat McDonough in Maryland Effort to Fight Illegal Immigration

Jim Rutledge Criticizes Barbara Mikulski for Supporting Amnesty Bill

FOREST HILL, Maryland – Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Jim Rutledge of Maryland joins Delegate Pat McDonough in the fight to defeat amnesty legislation for illegal immigrants and secure the Southern border with Mexico. McDonough is encouraging Marylanders to sign a petition in support of the Citizens of Arizona. Candidates for office in Maryland along with members of the General Assembly will be provided surveys asking them whether they agree with Arizona’s approach. Jim Rutledge said, "We have a responsibility to enforce the laws and secure our borders."

The Rutledge for Senate Campaign believes that Maryland should end the present policy of "catch and release" which continues to heighten the growing number of gang related problems. Barbara Mikulski continues to sit idle while the safety of our communities is in jeopardy. The cost of not enforcing the immigration laws combined with liberal spending practices supported by Barbara Mikulski is forcing Maryland deeper into debt. Jim Rutledge said, "Last year, Maryland spent in excess of 1.4 billion of taxpayer money supporting the illegal population in the state."

Jim Rutledge who possesses years of experience with constitutional law and criminal procedure believes the new Arizona law is reasonable and constitutionally sound. States like Maryland and Arizona have waited for years for Washington to enforce immigration laws but have failed to do so. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said, "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created an unacceptable situation." Jim Rutledge opposes the attempt by Barbara Mikulski and Harry Reid to pass the Amnesty Bill. Washington needs to enforce federal laws and not reward those who break our laws and threaten the security of our nation.
